While understanding that to Go Green can be an incremental process, Smith and Long believe that a focused effort can have a meaningful impact, as it:

• Sets a positive example for employees which boosts morale and company loyalty
• Improves efficiency and lowers operating costs
• Gains a competitive advantage by differentiating us as a Go Green industry thought leader
• Provides a cleaner and healthier work environment for all

To Go Green, Smith and Long has made a conscious joint effort of those in the office and field. Our responsibility to Go Green begins at the planning and design phase of our construction plans where we:

• Design construction plans with standard building materials and sizes in mind, thus reducing excess spending on materials that will go to waste.
• Purchase from suppliers that agree to buy back unused items or replace damaged materials
• Purchase materials that we can reuse, renew or recycle, i.e. Returnable pallets, reels and containers
• Avoid purchasing materials with excessive packaging
• Estimate when and where we will generate waste and use this schedule to efficiently plan our methods of handling waste

In the field, our electricians actively seek to Go Green by

• Strictly following waste management schedules and plans
• Coordinating with other on-site trades in order to minimize unnecessary use of materials
• Performing power quality analysis, Infrared Thermography to maximize efficiency of the electrical systems
• Document all Green on-site efforts to submit for LEED certification
• Offering on-site suggestions that, although potentially more expensive, reduces the customer’s ecological footprint, i.e. Energy reduction lighting, building automation systems, variable speed drives on all motors etc.

The office and its staff at Smith and Long are committed to Go Green by:

• Re-lighting entire office with compact fluorescent light bulbs and LED’s
• Making use of natural light as a source to heat, cool and light individual rooms
• Maximizing light reflection by choosing materials which reflect ambient light and brighten rooms
• Investing in energy-saving computers, monitors, printers, and faxes
• Having company wide energy-saving settings on all electronics
• Reducing paper waste through multiple Electronic Data Management systems
• Protocols for prioritizing paper use, i.e. Using recycled and chlorine-free paper, double-sided printing, save and reuse old paper boxes, recycling printer ink cartridges
• Maintaining healthy office air flow via greenery, outdoor airflow, and non-toxic cleaning products
